Traveling with lipedema comes with its own unique challenges, but it doesn’t have to stop you from enjoying the adventure. Recently, I went to Switzerland and was walking 15,000-20,000 steps a day while navigating long-haul flights. Here are some tips I’ve found helpful, whether you’re a seasoned traveler or just starting your wellness journey.
Compression Socks Are a Must (Even If You Don't Wear Them Every Day)
During my trip, compression socks were a lifesaver. I’ve personally tried both Wellow and Bombas brands, and while both have their strengths, I preferred Bombas. I found they pinched less, and their customer service is excellent. If you’re traveling, especially on long flights or walking extensively, I highly recommend wearing compression socks, even if it’s not part of your daily routine. Your legs will thank you!
Eating While Traveling: Staying on Track or Embracing Flexibility?
When it comes to eating while traveling, knowing yourself is key. Are you someone with an all-or-nothing mentality? Maybe you’re just starting your healthier lifestyle and worry that travel will derail your progress. If that sounds familiar, here are some tips to help you stay on track:
Book Hotels with Breakfast Options: Starting your day with a protein can make a huge difference. Many hotels, especially in Europe, offer breakfast that includes eggs, fresh fruit and vegetables, ham, cheeses, yogurt and other protein-rich options. Filling up early will help you avoid unhealthy temptations later in the day.
Stock Up at Local Markets: If you’re staying in an apartment or have access to a fridge, head to local markets like Coop or Migros to grab fresh produce, proteins, and snacks such as trail bars and jerky. It’s a simple way to keep healthy options on hand and I found these easily available.
Embrace Local Foods Without Guilt: If you’ve been on your wellness journey for a while and know that you can jump back into your healthy habits once you’re home, I encourage you to enjoy the local cuisine. It’s one of the best ways to experience a new culture. Balance is key!
Recipe of the Month: Tacos with Jicama Wraps
One of my favorite go-to recipes, especially after a trip, is this quick and healthy taco dish. Here's how to make it:
Ingredients:
Trader Joe’s jicama wraps
Your choice of protein (I like rotisserie chicken or grass-fed ground beef)
Mateo’s salsa
A sprinkle of Kerrygold cheese
Trader Joe’s microgreens for topping
Instructions:
Simply warm your choice of protein, load it into the jicama wraps, top with salsa, sprinkle a little Kerrygold cheese, and finish with some microgreens. It’s fresh, light, and satisfying!
